DEEP COMEDY FROM SHALLOW WATERS
Many of the UK’s rivers are navigable to the sea, that means that some seagoing boats of a small enough size can venture up the inland waters. Providing of course they fit under the bridges and where necessary though the locks. It also means the reverse is true – but would someone venture out in the open sea with a canalboat? Well, fans of Channel 4’s “Narrow Escapes” can find out this week as the programmes from Wednesday 4th to Friday 6th June recount Angry Boater Joel Sanders adventures, as in the middle of the night last year he did just that, and got a lovely picture of the sunrise (below)!
Joel has had an interesting life, a former stand-up comedian, he has spent the last fifteen years travelling the canals and rivers of Great Britain, performing the occasional show as the Angry Boater, where there happened to be a free evening at a theatre near where he was moored. There was quite obviously also a lot of travelling when he was a stand-up comedian. Especially when he set himself a challenge perhaps as crazy as taking a ten tonne canalboat out to sea. He attempted to be the first British comedian to perform in every state. He reached a creditable forty states.
Imagine the tales that someone can amass from performing everywhere from redneck bars to the glitter of Las Vegas, meeting your comedy heroes like the late Robin Williams. Then swapping that fast-paced life to the slow pace of a canal boat, Drifting through Great Britain, passing under Spaghetti Junction, over aqueduct’s with seventy foot drops, being at one with nature. To say nothing of the people you meet on your travels.
After taking his show to a number of Edinburgh Fringe Festivals Joel is heading out on a tour for the first time and that begins at Komedia Brighton on June 17th.
