The Great Gatsby Premieres at The Roman Theatre Open Air Festival

A Roman Amphitheatre, still in use in the 21st Century England sees audiences whisked back just a century, but to a different lifestyle. They will be transported to a smoky cabaret bar in 1920s America where a troupe of performers take to the stage for their final performance: the rise and fall of the legendary Gatsby. A brand-new adaptation of The Great Gatsby, by OVO Producer Mark O’Sullivan, premieres at the Roman Theatre Open Air Festival from the 8th to 24th August. Directed by OVO Associate Director, Kelly Ann Stewart.

Kelly Ann Stewart says: “Gatsby has been a favourite of mine since I was at school, but it is famously difficult to adapt, and there is nothing better than a challenge! Plus, with the centenary of the original novel taking place this year, it felt a bit like kismet.” Mark O’Sullivan adds:”It’s a dream come true adapting one of my favourite novels for the stage and in particular for this incredible and unique setting. In true OVO style we have gone for a bold reimagining of a classic which is notoriously hard to translate into performance. I’m full of excitement for the fresh approach we’re taking with this production, and to bring it to life with such a gifted cast and crew.”

OVO’s reworking of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless narrative brings the glittering Jazz Age to the Roman Theatre of Verulamium, the UK’s oldest producing theatre. Told through the eyes of Nick Carraway, the characters become entangled in mysterious millionaire Gatsby’s pathological pursuit of his former lover Daisy Buchanan, with fatal consequences.

Audiences are immersed in the hedonistic roaring 20s world of excess, fantasy, and “the great American Dream” as it collides with corruption, tragedy and the superficiality of wealth. This iconic tale rings true with audiences today as it considers the themes of unattainable dreams, social class, gender, and race. Cabaret style jazz music weaves through the story fittingly, within the Speakeasy setting – courtesy of celebrated British pianist and composer Andrew McCormack as Musical Director.

Renowned for his dynamic contributions to film and theatre, McCormack’s accolades include orchestrator and additional music composer for several Clint Eastwood movies, acclaimed jazz albums, and prestigious international touring including Ronnie Scott’s (London) and Le Duc des Lombards (Paris). McCormack will perform on stage as The Green Light Club Pianist.

The also cast includes: Jonathan Tynan-Moss (The Mousetrap, West End) as Nick; Jessica Vickers (Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, West End) as Daisy; Rochelle Jack (Napoleon: Un Petit Pantomime, Jermyn Street Theatre) as Texas; Nathan French (Robin Hood, South Mill Arts) as Jay Gatsby; David Joseph Healy (A Little Night Music, Edinburgh Fringe) as Tom; and Monica Sharp (Roaring 20s, Marella Voyager) as Jordan.
