Basildon Park near Pangbourne in Berkshire is a Georgian house sitting in 400 acres of historic parkland and gardens. Set location to many films from Pride and Prejudice to Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Take in the September colours with walks around the gardens and wider estate; explore the mansion and learn more about Basildon Park’s history.

England’s largest festival of history and culture, Heritage Open Days, is back between 12th and 21st September. Supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the festival allows organisations to highlight the history, heritage and culture of places and communities across the country. As part of the festival each year, many National Trust places throw open their gates to give everyone free access on select days. It’s a great opportunity for those who have not visited their local National Trust place before to experience their nature, beauty and history.

I enjoyed a visit there last year, and in addition to an exhibition showing the many films and television series which have used Basildon Park as a backdrop, it was also interesting to here of the way in the twentieth century the owners recreated the Georgian interior after most had been sold off in the past to pay off debts. The surrounding parkland is also beautiful and even JMW Turner used it in one of his pictures painted whilst he too was a guest at Basildon Park.
