The National Trust’s Cliveden estate sparkles with festive magic this winter as its highly anticipated Christmas season unfolds with an enchanting Nutcracker-themed experience. From dazzling decorations to extended opening hours, visitors step into a world of wonder and delight. For the first time, Cliveden extends its festive opening hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the estate’s magical atmosphere as dusk falls. Every Thursday and Friday until 19 December, the estate welcomes visitors with last entry at 5.30pm and closing at 6pm.
Inspired by the timeless festive ballet The Nutcracker, the historic gardens transform into a land of sweets and seasonal merriment. Visitors stroll beneath arches adorned with twinkling baubles and oversized candy canes, creating picture-perfect moments reminiscent of the Sugar Plum Fairy’s realm. In the Long Garden, majestic Nutcracker soldiers stand proudly on guard, while the iconic golden gates of the Sounding Chamber reveal a beautifully illuminated scene that captivates children and adults alike.
Food and drink take centre stage this season with Clara’s Café – a charming pop-up located in the picnic area. Serving a warming selection of seasonal treats, visitors savour mulled wine or spiced hot apple alongside delicious hot snacks and indulgent festive bites, perfect for staying cosy on a crisp winter’s day. Families discover Nutcracker-themed outdoor games along Ilex Grove, while festive selfie spots offer joyful moments to share and treasure.
Adding to the seasonal magic, Christmas carol singing fills the Sounding Chamber with heart-warming harmonies. Local school choirs and youth groups perform much-loved festive favourites in the chamber’s atmospheric surroundings on the following dates:
- Tuesday 9 December – 10.30am
- Wednesday 10 December – 1.30pm
- Thursday 11 December – 1.30pm
- Wednesday 10 December – 1.30pm
Christmas at Cliveden offers a truly memorable celebration, showcasing the historic estate at its most magical. Whether seeking seasonal family fun, a festive day out with friends, or a joyful moment of escapism, visitors are warmly invited to experience the wonder of Christmas brought to life in spectacular style.
