A much-loved Liverpool arts organisation is celebrating their 17th birthday with a ‘joyful, next-generation traditional dance party’ at St Brides Church on Saturday 17th October. Movema dance company, in league with live-band Saltcutters and Liverpool Irish Festival, are set to host a Céilí – an evening of dance and music born from their experiences as multiple-heritage artists.
Working with Irish traditional forms in Liverpool, the event has been put together in response to the Festival’s theme, I am here. Partygoers can expect dances and tunes from Ireland, England, Scotland and beyond and will also hear the surprising stories of how music and dance travel, adapt, change and upend what we think we know about identity. Co-CEO of Movema, Maria Malone said:
“We want everyone to feel welcome at this Céilí as we celebrate 17 years of Movema! No experience is needed and no partner is required. Everyone’s welcome to dance any role they wish. The evening’s calling is gender-free, so instead of ‘ladies and gents’ you might hear terms like ‘larks and robins’ or ‘ones and twos’. Dance whichever part feels right for you.”
Movema’s Chair, Chair Jessica Ariwa said: “Movema’s 17th birthday ceilidh is a chance to honour the people, communities and dancers who have made Movema what it is today. Through dance, Movema has given people the chance to express their heritage, culture and art and share the joy of that with others.
In a time where communities and the arts are under threat and under valued, Movema’s mission is as critical as ever and acts as a powerful force for the joys of community making and dance! So let’s raise a glass to 17 years of Movema: of bringing people together, sharing stories and moves, and to the many years to come.”
In the spirit of the old meanings of ‘Céilí’, ‘neighbour’, ‘visit’ or ‘gathering’, Movema and Saltcutters invite audiences to come together with their neighbours to celebrate our shared humanity through group dances that connect us to others and celebrate our similarities and our differences. Ticket price includes a hearty vegan, Irish stew and a bar will be operating serving refreshments. The evening is ideal for ages 16 and above.
Proceeds will go towards supporting Movema’s charitable work with women, children and resettled communities in Liverpool.
