This Wednesday at The Tung Auditorium ,Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Artist in Residence Benjamin Appl celebrates a classical singer known to many, who to him was a hero, a mentor, and – above all – a friend. For millions, the German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (1925-2012) was one of the greatest singers of modern times. As he says.; “His singing reached so many people and he touched their hearts with the art of song. For me he was more than just a teacher. Thank you, Dieter.”

Crafted from Appl’s personal memories, and incorporating letters, readings and anecdotes from Fischer-Dieskau’s incredible career, this is a song recital with an extraordinary difference: an intensely personal tribute from a brilliant young singer to the artist who changed his life. Benjamin will be accompanied at the piano by James Baillieu for a programme. which includes works by Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Britten, Barber, Mahler, Schumann, Wolf, Verdi, Bach, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Mozart amongst others.
