‘Moletrap have all the ingredients to become massive‘

Moletrap released their second EP Mid Welsh Pt. 2, the older sibling to their 2025 release Mid Welsh Pt. 1 last week. It’s arrival was heralded mid-March by the release of the second single from the EP “The Green Desert” The song was inspired by a camping trip to a secret lake in the Cambrian Mountains — known as the Green Desert of Wales.

After discovering old photos of family members wild camping there, four of them set out to recreate the journey they took decades ago. Even taking a bottle of whiskey, just as they had, to offer the local farmer in exchange for passage through his land to reach the remote lake. During the trip, they learned about the community that once lived and worked at the now-derelict Cwmystwyth Mine — deep in the heart of the Green Desert — where workers were often left to self-govern, or as one farmer described it, “live in a lawless place.”

That spirit, and the description of their home region as a desert, inspired them to write a Mid Welsh Western — about the people who lived there, the exploitation they faced under wealthy landlords, and the creeping sense of a new outside world pressing in. Today, their home — the least populated region in Wales and England — still contends with ecocide, tourism-driven commodification, limited healthcare, xenophobia, and exploitative county lines. In Part 2, they search for hope, healing, and pragmatism through music and community.
