The powerful & acclaimed dance theatre production “Woodhill” comes to Liverpool’s Unity Theatre this week

Coming to Liverpool’s Unity Theatre next Wednesday 21st & Thursday 22nd October is a powerful and acclaimed production that tells the story of three families who lost loved ones to suicide at HM Prison Woodhill – a notorious Category B male prison in Milton Keynes where a staggering number of self-inflicted deaths have happened.

Woodhill premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2023 to great critical acclaim, winning multiple awards including the Change Makers Award from the Sheila McKechnie Foundation and the Arts, Culture and Heritage award at The Charity Awards. …Gut punching choreography and unflinching beats shine a light on the hidden story of HMP Woodhill. Pushing the form of documentary theatre and dance, Woodhill is an explosive true story by multi-award-winning LUNG..

Drawn from first-hand testimonies and others with experience of the system, Woodhill is a dance theatre work that weaves those verbatim accounts voiced by actors through with dynamic choreography to expose the negligence and injustice embedded within the system…Timelier than ever due to the prison’s continued decline – as officially acknowledged by the Ministry of Justice in April 2026 – the piece forces us to confront the value placed on the lives of those behind bars centring three families who refuse to stop asking how and why their loved ones died and demanding change.

With a continued emphasis on platforming underrepresented voices and stories this is another example from the current season of the support the Unity Theatre gives to a diverse selection of theatre, film, dance, comedy and family shows – championing both emerging local theatre companies and nationally-acclaimed touring productions in every stage of their development.
